Financial evidence that does not hold up
Balances below the Canada working requirement, or funds that only appeared inside the 120-day window before submission, read as borrowed money rather than genuine savings.
The fix: Show 12 months of bank-issued statements with a stable closing balance held for at least 120 days, in CAD or clearly converted.
- 2
Details that disagree across documents
Names, dates of birth, passport numbers, employer names and travel dates that differ even slightly between forms, letters and statements are treated as unreliable evidence.
The fix: Cross-check every document against the passport spelling, character by character, including middle names and hyphenation.
- 3
Expiry and validity problems
Passports or supporting documents that expire too close to the travel dates are refused before the rest of the file is read.
The fix: For Canada: Passport must stay valid 6 months beyond travel; Travel / health insurance must stay valid 0 months beyond travel; Language test (IELTS/TOEFL/PTE) must stay valid 0 months beyond travel.
- 4
Photo that fails the biometric spec
Wrong size, head height or background is an automatic rejection at intake — the file never reaches an assessing officer.
The fix: 50 x 70 mm, head 31–36 mm chin to crown, Plain white or light grey background, taken within the last 6 months.
- 5
Weak ties and unclear intent
Without evidence of employment, study, property, family or ongoing commitments, an officer has nothing to weigh against the risk of overstay.
The fix: Attach an employer or institution letter with dates, plus any ownership, tenancy or dependant evidence that anchors you at home.
- 6
Itinerary that does not match the money
A trip length, accommodation plan and stated purpose that do not add up against the declared budget undermine the whole application.
The fix: Make the stay length, bookings and available funds tell one consistent story.
- 7
Missing or unreadable supporting documents
Screenshots, cropped scans and pages without the issuer's header are commonly discarded as unverifiable.
The fix: Submit complete, bank- or issuer-generated PDFs with every page present and legible.

Frequently asked questions
What is the most common reason a Canada visa is refused?
Financial evidence. Most Canada refusals trace back to funds that are too low, too recent, or presented in a format the officer cannot verify.
Can I reapply after a Canada visa refusal?
In most cases yes, but reapplying with the same file usually produces the same outcome. Fix the specific weakness named in the refusal notice, add the missing evidence, and only then submit again.
Does a previous refusal affect future applications?
Refusals are generally visible to future officers and to other destinations that ask about immigration history. Declare them honestly — an undeclared refusal is treated far more seriously than the refusal itself.
